About This Spot

Stepping into Higgins feels like entering a quietly refined retreat tucked into Portland’s bustling SW Broadway corridor. The pace here settles into something unhurried, inviting you to lean back and savor the moment amid warm, vintage-inspired surroundings where subtle light pools over wood and softly textured walls. It’s a place where conversation flows without rush and the expertise of attentive, thoughtful service is quietly reassuring without ever demanding the spotlight.

In this cozy yet elevated setting, the food gently unfolds as part of the entire experience rather than calling loud attention to itself. The kitchen’s reverence for Pacific Northwest ingredients blends seamlessly with French culinary traditions, turning every plate into a small story — from the richness of a smoked meat sandwich, layered with sharp cheddar and caramelized onions, to the comforting depth of a beautifully composed seafood stew. Each dish feels carefully composed, balancing rustic heartiness with nuanced freshness, offering moments of delight with textures and flavors that invite you to slow down and appreciate each bite.

Higgins carries an understated air of celebration, making it a natural choice for those occasional marks of significance — an anniversary, a special dinner before a show, or simply a reason to step outside the everyday. The gleaming oysters on the half shell beside a quietly spicy granite, the earthy risotto threaded with spring greens and tender crab, or a perfectly cooked duck breast evoke a genuine sense of place and season without fuss or showmanship.

Beyond the plates, the experience is enriched by the open glimpses into the kitchen’s rhythm, reminding diners of the human care behind each offering. The hospitality here feels anchored in knowledge and a real warmth, leaving guests comfortable and well-cared for but always free to simply enjoy the evening’s unfolding.

Whether you’re drawn by the thoughtful bar menu featuring classic cocktails or the full dinner experience that promises carefully sourced ingredients elevated by technique and heart, Higgins embodies a balance of familiarity and quiet discovery — a beloved Portland classic that invites you to return time and again, savoring not only food but the fullness of a moment well spent.

This place is def a fancy stop for someone like me - good for a big celebratory dinner, but too expensive for everyday dining. The host was a delight and knew the extensive and complicated specials well. The food was stunningly beautiful on the plate and was a well balanced taste experience. I enjoyed being able to see into the kitchen a bit, and the decor of the place is inviting and rich without being pretentious (no gold leafed stuff, thankfully, because that would be tacky, ahem).

Stopped here for dinner before a show at the Keller. Our waiter was very friendly and made great recommendations. I had a tasty beet salad and the single best razor clams I’ve had in my entire life. Highly recommend!

Another scrumptious delicious lunch. Always is! My wife and I eat here often. We know what is on the menu we like. We also know we'll be enticed by menu specials. Chef and kitchen team take pride making and presenting the orders. Looks beautiful on the plate and tastes great. For instance we started with the seasonal farmers market sourced summer vegetables, some raw and some blanched, with feta and edible mint flowers on the top. Pretty plated! Pretty delish! Black eye pea soup was a seasonal delight too! Then, we love the grass fed, Carman Ranch, burger with side of fermented veggies. This is our #1 favorite place to eat! And we have a load of #2's! Higgins always exceeds my expectations! And exceeds my expect-taste-ins! Seasonal! Local! Organic! House made sauces, fermented veggies and cured meats! Smiling menu-talking servers! Creative Chef and "bitchin" kitchen team! Bar or dining room is a place to meet-up with fellow foodies for a convivial and tasty experience!

Wow, what an incredible meal. We ordered the filet mignon, chopino, and the oyster gratin- all fantastic dishes full of flavor and hearty portions. (The braised greens blew our minds, btw). Our service was extremely attentive, and the atmosphere has a cozy vintage feel. I have lived here 10+ years and hadn’t heard of Higgins, and i can’t wait to go back.

I’ve been wanting to visit Higgins for forever! An absolute Portland classic. Such a perfect way to celebrate our 8th anniversary. Everything was excellent but the showstoppers were the charcuterie terrines and the salmon special. Service was excellent and the vibe was cozy. Although it will probably be a while before we treat ourselves to this full spread again, I’m excited to try their bar menu and lunch menu!

This place had great service, possibly the best I've ever had! The waiter staff, bartender, people from the kitchen, all just kind and seemed happy to be helping us. The food was good, I had the Pasta with Lemon Cauliflower Creme sauce. It was delicious! My friend had a plate with 2 kinds of duck and pickled squash. She said it was okay. Overall, I would go back to say hi to the staff, have the same pasta and try a few other interesting items on the menu.

this place is incredible. It’s been around for a long time and the experience shows. The staff were friendly and on top of everything despite every table taken. The Cioppino was the best I’ve ever had, the beets & sprouts were delightful, and the filet was cooked ti perfection…served with wonderful mash potatoes and braised greens. We sat in a booth inside the bar, for more of a white table cloth experience you can choose to have dinner in the dining room. What an absolutely fantastic dinner

After hearing about the possibility of Higgins closing down, my spouse decided to take me there for dinner to experience it. First off, our waitress service and refreshing our water service was great. When it came to busing our table, we had to protect our plates from being taken away too soon. We decided to spring for one of the specials; the 58 day aged ribeye steak with shishito peppers for $110. When the steak arrived it was disappointing for the price. They could have included the mushrooms with the plate, which was an additional cost. The flavor and cook on the steak was good, but about a quarter of the slices were inedible unrendered fat and cartilage. I know you come here for the ambience, instead of cooking at home. I have cooked my own tomahawk steaks on the BBQ grill, essentially more meat for a third of the cost. We ordered a starter, the summer vegetables with sheep's milk feta. It was nice and fresh at $23, a little pricy for a veggie dish. Overall, for the two dishes and three cocktails, we spent $220 including 20% tip. Experiencing this food almost makes us want to drive to the Buckhorn Steakhouse in Winters, CA where you can get at a 30 to 60 day aged 48oz Tomahawk angus ribeye for two along with all the sides for $130. Thanks Higgins for staying open...
